Stars of the White Nights is an international theater festival in St. Petersburg. It was created in 1993 on the initiative of Valery Gergiev, artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater. Today, there are also ten of the best festivals in the world.

Step 1
The 20th anniversary festival "Stars of the White Nights" is held in St. Petersburg from May 25 to July 15. At the opening, the Mariinsky Theater presented the main festival premiere, Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov, directed by the renowned British director Graham Wick. This time the artistic director of the theater Valery Gergiev chose the author's version of 1869, which Mussorgsky himself considered quite complete. Now the Mariinsky's repertoire includes two versions of the opera at the same time.

In addition to the premiere of Boris Godunov, the Mariinsky Theater presents a whole series of new projects. The most unexpected of them can be considered the stage version of Verdi's Requiem directed by the Swiss director Daniele Finzi Pasca. In 2011, he already collaborated with the Mariinsky Theater and staged Verdi's Aida, which was a huge audience success. The performance is still held in overcrowded halls.

The symphony program of the festival includes four symphonies and instrumental concerts by Brahms, Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony, which will be performed by the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven's Concerto, which will be performed by the Milan Orchestra. The play by George Kalanchine "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is the ballet premiere of the theater. And on June 14, a gala concert by Anna Netrebko will take place.

In addition, the 2012 edition of the Stars of the White Nights parallel program includes the 5th New Horizons Festival of Contemporary Music, which opened on June 2. This time, the focus is on the work of contemporary composer Alexander Raskatov - the world premiere of his groundbreaking work Three Angels Sang, the Russian premiere of A Midsummer Night's Dream and an orchestral interpretation of Mussorgsky's vocal cycle Songs and Dances of Death.
