The first mention of Moscow was recorded in the Ipatiev Chronicle. 1147 is considered to be the year of foundation. Every year the capital of our Motherland celebrates its birthday brightly and noisily.
An excursion into history
The idea to celebrate the capital's birthday appeared for the first time in the 19th century. By mutual agreement of Metropolitan Filoret, historians and writers, the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Moscow was scheduled for the spring of 1847. The holiday was planned to be divided into three stages: a church festival, a scholarly and a folk festival. Unfortunately, according to the plan, the anniversary did not happen. In the afternoon of December 31, Nicholas I issued a decree on the organization of a folk festival on January 1. Later, there were no annual celebrations of the city's birthday. However, 100 years later, by order of Stalin, the holiday dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Moscow took place on September 7. In 1986, Yeltsin ordered that the city's birthday be celebrated annually in early autumn. Since 1997, after the 850th anniversary of the capital, the city day has been held annually on the first Sunday in September.
What to visit
The main celebration usually takes place on Red Square. Previously, the holiday was held on Tverskaya, but the city government decided to transfer the main festivities to the main square of the country. Every year, concert venues, theater stages are organized here, famous artists perform, you can hear live music.
On the same day, an open-air theater awaits everyone on Teatralnaya Square. Small sketches, improvisational sketches, mime shows, as well as famous performances - all this attracts a lot of spectators of all ages.
For several years in a row, for those who like to keep abreast of all the latest events in their hometown, a meeting with the most popular journalists and presenters has been organized on Pushkin Square. Anyone can take a direct part in a lively discussion of pressing issues.
