In 2012, the famous Riga Opera Festival will take place from 5 to 17 June. By tradition, the guests of the holiday will have to get acquainted with the original season premieres and enjoy the most spectacular performances of recent years.

Step 1
The first opera festival in Riga took place in 1998. Since then, for 14 years, it has been a long-awaited event in the cultural life of the capital of Latvia. Connoisseurs of this genre from many parts of Europe come to get acquainted with the performances of the Latvian National Opera. In 2012, the audience will see not only premieres, but also meetings with famous Latvian and foreign opera performers. The organizers of the festival also included independent vocal and musical performances by eminent artists in the program.
Step 2
According to the information published on the website of the International portal Live Riga, in the period from 5 to 17 June, viewers will see at least seven interesting performances. Among them is The Nature of War, which tells the story of a warrior and a spy who enter the world of ghosts, darkness and light. This opera is broadcast in Latvian and Japanese with English subtitles.
Step 3
In addition, the audience will meet with two great works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky "Eugene Onegin" and "Mazepa" read by the Latvian director Andrei Zagars and the Croatian director Ozren Prokhic, respectively.
Step 4
The opening of the festival will be the production of The Barber of Seville by the brilliant young film director Aik Karapetyan, who by the age of 29 had already won a number of prestigious film awards and decided to present his innovative debut work in the opera genre to the audience.
Step 5
The original premiere of the last season of the Latvian National Opera was "Lucia di Lammermoor" by Gaetano Donizetti, based on the novel "Lammermoor Bride" by Walter Scott. The main parts in it will be performed by the stars of the Latvian opera Marina Rebeka, Murat Karahan and the Ukrainian singer Dmitry Popov.
Step 6
The Death of the Gods is the last part of the cycle of operas by Richard Wagner, which will complete the tetralogy Ring of the Nibelungen. The main parts in it will be performed by the Swedish tenor Lars Klevemann and the English soloist Katherine Foster. The entire cycle of operas is expected to be screened for the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth in 2013.
Step 7
The festival will end with the Polish Requiem by the renowned composer Krzysztof Penderecki, who has been working on this piece for over two decades. The piece of music will be timed to commemorate the victims of deportation.
