There are many public holidays in Russia. The most solemn ones are customarily called the New Year, March 8, February 23, May 9. However, there are other commemorative days on which public holidays are announced.
As usual, the date of May 1st is marked in red on the calendar. No one is against taking a break and not going to work. Only about the holiday itself, not everyone will remember its essence. Many are beginning to look for its origins in the Soviet Union, but this is not entirely true.
The event that became the root cause of the holiday took place in 1886 in the United States of America. The workers took to the streets and demanded from their employers that they improve working conditions, raise wages, and take care of social guarantees.
The capitalists did not get the idea, and the demonstration was dispersed. People died. But the events of this day became the impetus for similar performances around the world. As a sign of solidarity with the victims in America, since 1890, May 1 has been called the Day of Workers' Solidarity. 86 countries around the world have joined the idea of Solidarity and equated this holiday with national ones.
Such a "proletarian" holiday could not be overlooked in the Union. Grandmothers and mothers remember how they celebrated it on a grand scale, when, in any weather, they went to a demonstration, and then to May Day - to eat barbecue. Initially, May Day, by the way, was organized illegally. This is a 19th century phenomenon. Then, at the meetings, they discussed how someone lives and fights for their labor rights.
Since 1992, May 1 has been named the Spring and Labor Day. Now this is the day when you can relax and visit. The main thing is not to forget who and when gave the descendants such an opportunity.
