The Day of Unity of the Baltic States has its own history, rooted in the deep past. On September 22, 1236, the monks of the Order of the Swordsmen and the crusaders made a joint robbery raid on Lithuania. After a successful attack, the soldiers returned with rich booty, but in the city of Saul they were overtaken by the united Baltic peoples and fought back. As a result of the battle, the master died, and the Order, which had been robbing and burning villages for 34 years, was no longer able to gather again. Since then, this day has reminded the peoples of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia of their common heroic past.

Baltic Unity Day is not a public holiday, it is an ordinary working day. Nevertheless, countries are preparing entertainment events not only on this day, but also for several days before the holiday. The program of the event offers interesting discussions about the life, culture and religion of ancient Latvians, which usually take place at the Latvian National History Museum. Scientists who study various aspects of the life of the tribes of the ancient Balts take part in the discussion.

On the Day of Unity of the Baltic States, master classes are held on the manufacture of children's toys, antique jewelry, as well as items of clothing for ancient Latvians. Anyone can take part in the lesson. And so that the students are not so bored of sitting over their needlework, after them a concert with the participation of folklore groups awaits.

On the eve of the memorable day, the Baltic libraries organize thematic exhibitions about the life of their ancient ancestors. They also host photo exhibitions showing the ancient cultural monuments of the Baltic tribes that have survived to this day.

Every year in Lithuania, the Fire of Baltic Unity is lit on the Bastion Hill. The blazing flames remind the residents of neighboring countries how strong they can be by sticking together.
