To enter the water or land in high waves, wait for the interval between the surf and the reflected wave. While in the water, select an area of shore with sand or pebble shoals. This area is the safest to get out of the water in case of strong waves. As you approach the shore, roll over onto your back with your feet pointing towards the shore. In other words, swim on your back, feet first. Do not worry that in this position you will swim slowly - the surf wave itself will carry you to the shore. But beware that in this position you are almost unprotected if the wave covers you. Therefore, roll onto your back only in front of the shore, and not in advance. Keeping your body afloat, move to the shore with stroking movements of your hands at your hips. Get ready to hit the bottom with your feet.

As soon as the wave subsides, lower your legs and stand on the bottom. Immediately after that, begin to quickly move towards the shore with the wave. Watch the waves. When a wave reflected from the shore approaches, turn sideways to it, lean in its direction, rest your feet and try to stay in place. Once the reflected wave has passed, continue going ashore. All waves rise and fall gradually, so keep to the smallest wave for a safer exit.

If the waves are small, swim calmly, rising and rolling off them. To overcome a large wave, take a breath in advance, hold your breath and dive under it. If you are caught in a strong tidal wave while swimming towards the shore, do not try to overcome it. Try to roll over onto your back, feet first, as described above.

When swimming in big waves, try breaststroke. It is this style of swimming that allows you to swim for a long time and stay on the water in strong waves, providing a good view. Check the direction of movement more often, be guided by the direction of the waves and objects visible on the shore. Inhale air away from the approaching wave. It is better to overcome large oncoming waves with a crawl on the chest or on the side, in all other cases, swim with a breaststroke.
