International Day of Solidarity of Journalists is an annual professional holiday for media representatives. During it, it is customary to meet with colleagues in order to exchange experiences, feel a special unity and remember those who are no longer there.
It is customary to celebrate the International Day of Solidarity of Journalists on 8 September annually. It was established at the IV Congress of the International Organization of Journalists, held in 1658 in Bucharest. This organization is the largest and oldest association of journalism professionals in the world.
This date was not chosen by chance. On this day in 1943, an outstanding Czechoslovak journalist and writer, Julius Fucik, was executed. He became the founder of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia, and during the Second World War he was a member of the liberation movement, for which he was arrested by the Gestapo. In the dungeons of the Prague prison he wrote the world-famous book "Report with a noose around the neck", which was later translated into 70 languages. After his death, Julius was awarded the International Peace Prize.
On the Day of Solidarity of Journalists all over the world, congresses of media representatives are held, conferences and awards are held. Journalists from all over the world come to these events to meet with their colleagues and friends, share their impressions, experience and professional achievements.
Quite often, charity evenings or concerts are organized to commemorate the dead journalists. All funds from these activities are usually donated to the families of the victims. Many outstanding musicians and performers take part in the concerts. In our country, for example, on September 8, a memory concert takes place, which is organized by the Union of Journalists of Russia and the Moscow State Conservatory.
In addition, the Pulitzer Prize, one of America's most prestigious awards in literature, journalism, music and theater, is awarded on International Journalist Solidarity Day. Traditionally, it takes place in New York at Columbia University.
