The twentieth century for Bashkortostan has become difficult, full of contradictions, tragic and dramatic events. The main feature that determined the historical and economic development of the region was its entry into Russia and the Soviet Union. In the early years of Soviet power, Bashkiria became an autonomous part of the Russian republic. Autonomy was created within the Small Bashkiria and included separate regions of the modern territory of the republic.

At the end of the 80s of the last century, socio-economic problems in the country and the republic became aggravated. Dissatisfaction with the cultural and spiritual needs of the multinational people of Bashkiria led to the intensification of the social movement for sovereignty.

The Day of Sovereignty of the Republic of Bashkortostan is celebrated on October 11. On this day in 1990, the Supreme Council of the republic proclaimed the Declaration of State Sovereignty. This action confirmed the status of Bashkortostan as a legal democratic state. The name Republic of Bashkortostan was adopted a little later - in 1992. At the same time, an agreement was signed on the division of powers between the bodies of state power of Russia and the bodies of power of the individual republics that are part of it.

In 1993, the Supreme Soviet of the republic prepared a draft Constitution for the sovereign Republic of Bashkortostan. The Constitution was adopted at the end of December 1993. It consolidated the changes that took place in Bashkortostan over the previous years, fixing the level of independence of the republic. This event made it possible to create a legal basis for the democratization of all aspects of life. The new version of the Constitution of Bashkortostan was adopted in November 2000. It reflected the agreement of Bashkortostan with the status of an internal republic of the Russian Federation.
