Your baby was born, you gave him a name, but you want to carry out a baptismal ceremony in the near future. Or maybe you are already quite an adult, but are interested in when you can celebrate the name day (name day, Angel Day). In any case, this is useful knowledge, because in our life there are not so many truly bright holidays.

Instructions

Step 1

Go to an Orthodox church or bookstore and buy an Orthodox calendar. Find the calendar (month).

Step 2

Find the name of your saint and determine the day on which his memory is celebrated. This day will be your name day.

Step 3

If there are several days of commemoration of saints with your name in a year, and you do not know for sure in honor of which of them you were baptized, then find the next day after the official date of your birth to commemorate the saint whose name you bear. This date will be considered your name day.

Step 4

Please note that the names of the New Martyrs of Russia appeared in the calendar after 2000. Therefore, if you were baptized before 2000, then you must choose the name of the saint who was glorified before that time. If the date of commemoration of one of the New Martyrs of Russia is closer in time to the date of your birth, then you must choose it if the baptism took place after 2000.

Step 5

Do not forget that in the church tradition, some modern names may have a slightly different sound (Yuri - Georgy, Svetlana - Fotinia). Therefore, if you look for the name "Yuri" in the calendar, then you are unlikely to find it.

Step 6

The Orthodox Church allows exceptions to the general rule and allows you to arbitrarily choose the date of the name day, in accordance with the name enshrined in official documents. If you wish, read the lives of the saints whose name you bear, and choose the saint whose deeds you liked the most. When creating a prayer, turn to exactly the saint whom you have chosen.

Step 7

If you were not baptized, then you can celebrate the name day, but not the Angel's Day, since only at baptism does a person receive not only a heavenly intercessor (the saint whose name he bears), but also a Guardian Angel.

Step 8

If you are baptized and want to celebrate Angel's Day, then before the start of the holiday, be sure to go to the temple, confess and receive communion. Before confession and communion, it is necessary to observe a three-day strict fast. If your Angel's day falls on fasting, then the celebration is postponed to the time when you can eat fast food.
