It would seem - why is the national Bashkir and Tatar holiday Sabantuy held in Azerbaijan? Meanwhile, it has long become traditional and takes place in the capital of the state, the city of Baku, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
The fact is that more than 40 thousand ethnic Tatars live on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, whose ancestors settled here about a century and a half ago. It was the Tatar diaspora, preserving their national traditions, celebrated the Sabantuy holiday, the roots of which go back to ancient times and are associated with the cult of the land. This is an agrarian holiday, which first took place at the end of April, after the completion of spring field works, and now it is celebrated on the occasion of their end in mid-July.
Traditionally, in Baku, Sabantuy is held annually on 15 July. This holiday has long been attended not only by those who consider themselves a Tatar by nationality, but also by the indigenous people of Azerbaijan. They are happy to join their neighbors and fellow countrymen - the Tatars, celebrating this event with them.
The holiday of labor and friendship opens with a greeting from the President of Tatarstan, which emphasizes that it is a connecting thread not only between the past, present and future of the Tatar people, but also the thread that binds the Tatar and Azerbaijani people together.
Musicians, folk and art groups from Tatarstan come to Sabantuy in Azerbaijan. Horse racing and other national amusements must be included in its program: tug-of-war, running in sacks, running with an egg in a spoon, accordion competition, wrestling competitions, climbing a vertical pole.
