International family day

International Family Day is celebrated annually on May 15th. The UN General Assembly (United Nations) has proclaimed 1994 the International Year of the Family. In addition, a resolution was adopted, which, among other things, indicated that the International Day of the Family would be celebrated annually on May 15.

This holiday is intended to draw public attention to the numerous problems of the family. In particular, this applies to families with many children, families affected by hostilities or experiencing severe financial difficulties.

The proclamation of the International Day of the Family was the occasion for a number of promotional activities. In different countries, thematic conferences, radio and television programs are held, which draw attention to important problems of the family in general and for each specific region in particular.

The theme of the festive events is different every year. For example, in 2005 the main theme was “The impact of HIV and AIDS on family well-being”, and in 2010 it was “The impact of migration on families around the world”.

Family Day in Russia

In addition to the International Day of the Family, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated in Russia every year on July 8. The decision to launch this holiday was made in 2008.

The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity has its own interesting story. The idea of the emergence of this holiday belongs to the residents of the city of Murom (Vladimir region), which stores the relics of the spouses Peter and Fevronia, patrons of Orthodox Christian marriage.

The story of their love and life has come down to our days thanks to the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom", which was written in the 16th century by Yermolai Erasmus.

According to legend, Prince Peter suffered from leprosy. Once in a dream he had a vision that the maiden Fevronia from the village of Laskovoy, which is located in the Ryazan land, could heal him. Peter found this virgin, she healed the prince and became his wife.

Peter and Fevronia were examples of conjugal love, fidelity and family happiness. According to legend, they died on the same day - June 25 (July 8 - according to the new style) in 1228. Their bodies, located in different places, somehow miraculously ended up in the same coffin. In 1547, Peter and Fevronia were canonized, and their relics are kept in the church of the Holy Trinity Monastery in the city of Murom.

The holiday has its own award - "Medal for Love and Loyalty". One side of the medal is decorated with a portrait of Peter and Fevronia, on the other there is a chamomile (a symbol of the holiday). On this day, various events aimed at supporting families are held; great attention is paid to large families.
