The theme of the New Year's holiday does not have to be tied to the mascot of the coming year or conform to generally accepted standards. You can have a costume party related to a specific theme (for example, a gangster, pirate or pajama party), organize a party in a specific color, to which guests must come, say, in red clothes, or have an accessory of that color with them.
