Ask the seller to show you the flowers up close and let you touch them. They are not allowed - then it is better to refuse to buy at this place altogether. Find another store with more responsive staff and more assortment that you don't need to hide from customers.
Choose flowers with buds
Take a close look at your chosen flowers. If they have buds - great, then the plants are fresh, they will stand for a long time in the water and can still bloom. Of course, a fully opened flower looks more beautiful, but it will delight the owner of the gift much less.
Feel the buds. Fresh flowers have dense petals, easily bend to the side and quickly return to their place. Some unscrupulous sellers remove the lower part of the flower, tearing off the dead parts of the bud. Note that the sepal should fit snugly against the bud that is starting to bloom. The complete absence of leaves is an indicator that the plant has been in the store for a long time and they tried to extend its life by removing excess parts that can absorb water.

A fashionable and unusual way of selling flowers is baskets assembled from them. Flowers are placed in a special package with a sponge at the bottom. According to the assurances of the sellers, you just need to pour water inside the container, and the composition will delight you for a very long time.
In fact, fresh flowers in such baskets are very rare. Even if they get there, they will not stand for a long time, since they are very shortly cut off and all the leaves are removed. And the water from the sponge does not evenly flow to all the stems.
Another nuance that you should pay attention to when choosing fresh flowers is their color. Don't buy plants with unnatural colors or glitter. Florists use them to hide dried or rotten plants.
And finally, one more piece of advice. If, after you have touched and smelled all the flowers in the store, you are not asked to leave, surprise the sellers even more - shake the flower. Only slightly so as not to break. Some craftsmen stick the fallen buds on a small piece of tape or wire. When shaken it will be visible.
