Every year in early August, the German city of Frankfurt am Main gathers thousands of people on the banks of the river signs. At this time, the Main River Festival is held there - a colorful and interesting event that lasts several days.
The River Main Festival, or as the Germans call it, Mainfest has an ancient tradition. In ancient times, it was considered a holiday-worship of the Main River, which fed all the inhabitants with wonderful fish. It was a holiday for boatmen and fishermen who thanked the river for its generosity. They roasted a huge bull on the shore and poured wine into the Mine, which was a symbolic sacrifice. Street performances were staged for children, parades were held, and in the evening the city was illuminated with thousands of lights.
More than one century has passed since then, but the people of Germany still celebrate this festival on a large scale. It starts on Friday evening in the main city square, located in the historical part of the city - Römerberg. At exactly 19.00, the city authorities hold the opening ceremony of the Festival in front of the fountain, from which wine is poured during the event. Then the residents of the city gather for a grand festive concert with the participation of famous German bands.
For the next three days, guests of the holiday enjoy a variety of entertainment. The city has attractions, shooting ranges and art exhibitions, various fairs, lotteries, games, competitions and music shows. The Main River Festival gathers thousands of people of all ages on the city's waterfront, making it an exciting family celebration. As in ancient times, a whole bull is roasted on the bank of the river, they drink delicious apple wine and do not forget to pour a little into the river to pay tribute to the tradition of the holiday.
On Sunday, guests of the Main River Festival can watch a fascinating spectacle - a festive regatta sailing along the great German river. Well, this event ends with the traditional colorful fireworks, which is held on Monday evening.
