A beard is an essential part of a gnome's costume. Sometimes, of course, they make a suit without a beard, but then the gnome does not look like himself. The beard gives completeness to his image. A beard can be made in different ways, but it will look most interesting if it is tied with a fringe.

Instructions
Step 1
Start knitting the beard from above. To do this, measure the child's face and tie a chain of air loops of the desired length. Turn the work over, take a piece of braid and knit the next row with single crochets, attaching the braid to the knit. To do this, as you knit, lay the braid on the posts of the previous row. Tying to the end of the row, turn the work over.
Step 2
Knit in columns several rows without adding or subtracting loops. It all depends on what shape and length of the beard you choose. If the beard is short and wide, 15-20 rows will be enough. After that, start decreasing the loops, just without tying 5-7 columns in each row. If the beard is long and narrow, then after knitting 25-30 rows, subtract the loops as follows. From the beginning of the row, knit 2 double crochets, then 2 stitches together, and so knit to the end of the row. Decrease the loops until there are 5 stitches left.
Step 3
Start knitting the fringe from the bottom. In each column, knit 1 loop. Knit even rows with half-columns. Carefully place the loops of the next row on the loops of the previous one. This way, knit until where the beard meets the braid. After knitting the last row, break the thread, tighten the knot and thread between the posts.
