In ancient Russia, this holiday fell mainly on the month of March, sometimes on the day of Easter, until in 1492 the Moscow Cathedral ordered that the autumn month - September, or rather September 1, be considered a celebration of the New Year.
It was then that it was ordered to collect tribute from the people, and the tsar himself, the priest, appeared in the Kremlin, where ordinary people could see him.
During the reign of Peter I, by order of the tsar, the New Year was ordered to be celebrated on January 1, so to speak, according to the principle of the whole of Europe. Tsar Peter ordered the townspeople to decorate houses and streets with colorful garlands, coniferous branches, and on Red Square one could see volleys of fireworks! Also, the tsar ordered all residents of the city to congratulate each other, make gifts to relatives and friends, and generally have fun with all the heart on this day!
At the beginning of the XX century V. I. Lenin decided to change the calendar of chronology. By order of Peter I, the Julian calendar was introduced in the country, and chronology began not from the creation of the world, but from the Nativity of Christ. IN AND. Lenin decided to introduce the Gregorian calendar, with a difference of 13 calendar days from the previous one. The Orthodox Church did not agree with Lenin's decree, and continued to keep track of the Julian calendar.
That is why in Russia Christmas is celebrated on January 7 to this day.
