In Ukraine, it is customary to celebrate Signal Corps Day every year on August 8. This holiday was officially established on February 1, 2000. It was on August 8, 1920 that the training of signalmen began at the Kiev military school, and the President of Ukraine Leonid Danilovich Kuchma considered this date very significant.
The Day of Signal Corps of Ukraine is celebrated not only by those for whom this holiday is professional. On the contrary, this is a significant event for the entire country. It is on this day that the President of Ukraine, the Minister of Defense and other famous people can remind the citizens of their country how important the work of a signalman is. Representatives of this profession helped to win the Great Patriotic War, and it was they who were entrusted with the task of strengthening the military forces and defense capabilities of the country.
On August 8, both professional military signalmen and young people who are just undergoing training in this specialty are celebrating. Colleagues congratulate each other and accept congratulations from other people, including important public figures. The solemn speech, as a rule, is delivered by the President and the highest ranks of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, trying to emphasize the importance and prestige of the profession of a military signalman. For the same purpose, in some cities thematic events are held, which can be attended by everyone.
To make the holiday even more solemn, the best military signalmen are awarded. They are presented with memorable gifts from the state, diplomas, letters of thanks, etc., and also awarded extraordinary military ranks, which is especially pleasant. The best workers of the signal troops on their professional holiday are cited as an example to everyone, talking about their merits and glorifying them.
In order for young people to understand the importance of the profession of a military signalman and learn to respect it, a number of educational events are held on August 8 in some Ukrainian schools. In 2009, for the holiday, the Museum of the History of Communications of the Naval Forces of Ukraine was opened, where a variety of samples of professional communications equipment were presented, from the time of the Great Patriotic War to the present. It is on August 8 that it is especially appropriate to visit this museum, as well as many other institutions where thematic exhibitions and other events are held.
