The Independence Movement Day is celebrated in Tunisia every year on 3 September. Soon after the end of World War II, on this day, a movement for independence was organized in the republic. His activities ultimately led to the complete independence of the state from France.
Despite the repressions organized by the colonial authorities against the participants in the national independence movement, military resistance to the colonialists was actively developing in the country. Organized detachments of farmers destroyed the estates of French planters, killed French officers, blew up bridges. In 1952 and 1953, the colonialists had to harvest their crops under the protection of tanks.
France sent more than 70,000 troops into the country, but the liberation movement grew steadily. Protest sentiments grew more and more in society, the organized Tunisian proletariat entered into a harsh struggle. In the summer of 1955, France was forced to make concessions, she agreed to grant Tunisia independence, but with the proviso that the state has no right to determine the country's foreign policy.
But the Tunisian liberators still achieved what they wanted. On March 20, 1956, a new agreement was signed, which gave Tunisia full independence. From that moment on, the country celebrates Independence Day.
Habib Bourguiba was elected Prime Minister of Tunisia in April 1956, and a year later he became its president. Bourguiba was the recognized leader of the Dustur party, which differed from other bourgeois parties by stronger ties with the broad masses. In its asset can be entered and indisputable merits in the liberation movement of the country.
On the Independence Movement Day in Tunisia, commemorative and festive events are held everywhere. Citizens of the country remember the liberators of the republic, their hard struggle for the independence of the country. On the main street in the capital, named after the first president, Habib Bourguiba, military parades, rallies and demonstrations are held, and festive concerts are held for the townspeople.
