In 2017, Russians will have a relatively short (nine-day) New Year's holidays, but the number of “long weekends” will increase. The country will have four-day rest periods in February and May and three "enhanced" three-day weekends in April, June and November; however, no “working Saturdays” are expected in 2017.
How will we rest on New Year's holidays in 2017
Long winter holidays for Russians have already become habitual: until 2004 inclusive, only the 1st and 2nd days were non-working days, and since 2005, the general celebration of the New Year and Christmas has continued in the country from 8 to 12 days, depending on which days of the week correspond to official holidays.
In 2017, the New Year holidays in Russia will be relatively short: they will last only 9 days, starting from December 31, 2016 (Saturday) and ending on Sunday, January 8. In fact, one work week plus the weekend attached to it.
The first working day in January will be the ninth. School winter holidays will end on the same day. Children in the traditional four-quarter scheme will begin resting a week earlier than adults on Sunday 25 December; in schools, where the periods of study and rest are alternated according to the "5 + 1" system, the time of winter rest for children will be the same as for their parents - the first week of January.
In accordance with the laws of the country, if the holidays coincide with the weekend, the day of rest must be "compensated" by transferring the weekend to any other day during the year. In 2017, two days off in January, the Ministry of Labor proposed to "combine" them as follows:
- January 1 (Sunday) - on February 24 (Friday),
- January 7 (Saturday) - on May 8 (Monday).
Postponing the weekend to February 23
The celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day in 2017 falls on Thursday. Due to the additional day off, postponed from January 1, this holiday is joined to the following weekend.
Thus, before the "men's holiday", Russians will have a record-breaking work week for 2017 (two full working days plus a shortened pre-holiday Wednesday), while on February 23 in Russia there will be four days in a row:
- February 23, Thursday - actually a holiday;
- February 24, Friday - day off, postponed from January 1;
- February 25 and 26, Saturday and Sunday are regular weekends.
How we rest on March 8 in 2017 in Russia
International Women's Day in 2017 was the only public holiday celebrated during the working week. March 8 falls on Wednesday, and there are no weekend transfers for this period.
Therefore, congratulations to women on the holiday will be held strictly "day to day", and the work week will be divided into two two-day work periods with one day off between them. The only relief is March 7, on the day before the holiday, you can still leave work early (it is reduced by one hour).
Postponement of days off to May holidays - 2017
May is the most eventful month, the Day of Spring and Labor and celebrations dedicated to Victory Day fall on it. In 2017, the "first May" will be three days, and on May 9 the country will have a mini-vacation lasting four days.
The public holiday on May 1 in 2017 falls on Monday, naturally adjoining the previous weekend. Thus, the rest on the Day of Spring and Labor in Russia will be three days in a row, from Saturday, April 29 to May 1. This will be followed by a shorter four-day work week, followed by another period of general rest from work and study.
The public holiday on May 9 according to the calendar falls on Tuesday. At the same time, the “Christmas” day off, which fell on January 7th, was postponed to Monday. Thus, on the anniversary of the Victory in 2017, Russia has four days in a row - starting from Saturday (May 6) and ending on Tuesday.
How we rest in June 2017 on the Day of Russia
The only public holiday in the summer months in the country is June 12, when Russia Day is celebrated. In 2017, this date will fall on Monday, and there will be no weekend transfers during this period.
Thus, the June holidays will last three days - from the 10th to the 12th (from Saturday to Monday).
How will we rest on November 4
On November 4, Russia solemnly celebrates the Day of National Unity, which replaced the November holidays of the Soviet era.
In 2017, this day falls on Saturday. In such cases, the day off in Russia is usually postponed to the next Monday after the holiday. This will happen this year as well. Thus, the November 2017 holidays in Russia will also last three days - from Saturday to Monday, from the 4th to the 6th.
