Since August 14, 2012, Buenos Aires has hosted the largest annual event in the tango calendar. In the Argentine capital, the world championship in this dance was held, in which anyone could take part. It was only necessary to submit an application via the Internet. This year the competition had its first anniversary - Tango Buenos Aires took place for the tenth time.
The dancers competed separately in two categories - Tango Salon ("salon tango") and Tango Escenario ("stage tango"). The winner in each of them was awarded a relatively small cash prize of $ 8,500. Salon tango is closer to the classical origins of dance - it is a beautiful and slow, but very difficult to perform walk of couples across the stage. It was in this form that tango was born in the forties of the last century in the Argentine capital.
357 couples competed in this category, and a total of 491 couples took part in the championship, and most of the dancers were Argentines. The absolute winner in both categories was a local pair of artists - Christian Sosa and Maria Noel Ciuto. Among foreigners, the best were Russians Dmitry Vasin and Taisiya Fenenkova, who were ninth in the "stage" category and fifth in the "salon" category.
The competition was held at the Buenos Aires Exposition Center, the Cinema and Concert Theater on May 25 and the Teatro de la Ribera. However, Tango Buenos Aires is not limited to sports. In these two weeks, in different parts of the city, according to the already established tradition, tango masters give lessons to beginners and conduct master classes for those who already know how to dance.
Several festivals have been held on topics related to Argentine dance. For example, the city hosted a festival dedicated to Astor Piazzolla, the most famous bandoneon performer. This instrument, similar to an ordinary accordion, is inextricably linked with the birth of tango.
A fair of goods and services related to dance took place in Buenos Aires these days, at which mainly small private companies were represented. All these events gathered in the Argentine capital nearly half a million people, including 70 thousand foreign tourists. This is a quarter more than in the previous Tango Buenos Aires.
