March 13 is the national holiday in Thailand - the day of the Thai elephant
Why elephant day?
Just look at the map of Thailand. Its outline is very reminiscent of the silhouette of an elephant. The central part is the head of an elephant with a trunk, the northern and eastern parts are the ears, and the trunk itself points to the south. This is how Thais see their map.
Therefore, it is not surprising that they have a national holiday "National Thai Elephant Day" dedicated to this strong, powerful animal. The elephant is a powerful animal, but at the same time obedient and even gentle. This holiday is celebrated every year on March 13th. It was first celebrated in 1998. Therefore, the holiday is considered relatively new.
The thirteenth number was chosen because it was on March 13 in 1963 that the white elephant was proclaimed the national animal of Thailand. This was done by the Royal Thai Forestry Department.
Throughout their history, elephants have been something special for this country, they walked side by side with people throughout the centuries of history. Elephants were a symbol of wealth and luxury for the rich and a deity for the poor. Also, these powerful animals were often used in wars as military artillery and for sowing in the fields. They were indispensable when planting seeds or plowing and harvesting. Which once again gives reason why Thais value and love the elephant so much, worship and adore them.
The most valuable species is the white elephant. If it is suddenly discovered by accident, then it immediately becomes the property of the ruling monarchy.
How is the holiday itself celebrated?
The entrance to the celebration itself is free. Anyone can come and see this spectacle. It runs 80 km from the north of Bangkok, on a specially prepared site. Therefore, any tourist can freely go to the holiday. This was done so that as many people as possible could pay respect to the sacred elephants and look at their power and nobility.
The holiday takes place on a specially equipped area about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok, admission to the holiday is completely free. This is done so that as many visitors as possible come to see and express their respect to these most noble creatures of nature.
